First there was Charli XCX’s “Apple Girl.” Then there was Role Model’s “Sally.” Now, there’s Lily Allen’s “Madeline.” Or at least there was last night, when the artist took Saturday Night Live by surprise with an extra special guest.

Released in October, Allen’s West End Girl chronicled the breakdown of her marriage with Stranger Things actor David Harbour, who she married in 2020 before separating from earlier this year. In the album, she described her ex-husband’s affair with a woman, named Madeline, who he treated to fancy bags and played tennis with. She reappeared time and time again throughout the track list, but was given a voice on “Madeline,” Allen's emotional plea for honesty from the mistress herself. Interspersed throughout the catchy chorus and gut-wrenching lyrics, a snarky Madeline sent “love and light” to the singer through voicemails, ensuring that their mutual lover was telling her the truth.

Performing the fan-favorite hit on SNL, Allen—wearing a strapless little black dress tied down the front in bows—transformed the stage into a dimly lit bedroom, draped in semi-sheer curtains that separated the star from a shadowed figure behind her. The mystery woman, sitting on a bed and scrolling through her phone, reflected Allen with her long, dark hair and black lace. Though hidden for the majority of the song, she ultimately performed the spoken-word portion, revealing herself with her recognizable voice.

Dakota Johnson, who then broke through the curtain to join Allen on stage as the infamous Madeline, was dressed in a transparent nightgown and long, lacy housecoat. Portraying the titular role, she kissed Allen’s cheek and finished the song by her side. Ultimately, the two broke character, hugging it out on stage.
