Kane Brown and Katelyn struggled to record “Beauty and the Beast” due to its challenging harmonies and contrasting styles
The duet is part of Disney’s country EP Main Street Country featuring artists like Maddie & Tae and BRELAND
Katelyn, a self-proclaimed Disney fan, says the experience was special for their family, especially their daughters, who heard a sneak peek in the car
Kane Brown and his wife Katelyn may make marriage look easy — but delivering a Disney duet proved to be anything but.
"It took me hours to get it right," the country star, 32, admits to PEOPLE about their recording of the Disney classic "Beauty and the Beast" for the all-new country EP Main Street Country. "I was frustrated, to be honest. I’m not used to staying in the studio for hours and hours and hours to try and do harmonies and sing soft," he says with a laugh. "I remember just leaving the studio and I went and sat on the front porch."
"It was totally out of our element," adds Katelyn, 33, to PEOPLE about recording the award-winning ballad. "[Kane] knew it was a big song with two totally different styles — and he wasn't used to that. But from my background of singing, I was really used to that. So just hearing him in this different way was so beautiful."
Indeed, while the song — originally made famous by Céline Dion and Peabo Bryson and later reimagined by Ariana Grande and John Legend — proved to be a challenge for the country hitmaker behind songs such as "Heaven," "Homesick" and his No. 1 duet with Katelyn "Thank God," "Beauty and the Beast" was right in Katelyn’s wheelhouse.
"I was really excited to do this one," says Katelyn, who says she has long wanted the couple to dress up as Beauty and the Beast for Halloween, but has never been able to talk Kane into it. "'Beauty and the Beast' is the most iconic, most beautiful Disney song. I just knew we had to do this one. Plus, this was definitely in my realm and my style of singing."
Indeed, several styles of singing find their way onto Main Street Country, set for release April 3 and featuring award-winning artists such as Restless Road (“The Climb”), Dasha (“She’s So Gone”), BRELAND (“Go the Distance”) and Maddie & Tae (“You’ll Be in My Heart”).
And if these artists weren’t excited enough to lend their voices to these Disney classics, their kids most definitely were. "I was driving the girls to gymnastics the first time I played it in the car," says Katelyn. "I took the kids to the studio when they put the strings on it, and they let the kids come in and play with the harp. It was just such a cool experience."

But out of all the artists who got a chance to put their spin on these Disney classics, it might have been Katelyn who was the most excited. "I say I’m a Disney kid, but I’m like a Disney adult," Katelyn admits with a laugh. "We have to go three times a year with the kids and do all the things. I don’t know who’s the bigger kid. We go on every ride and I’m hitting every gift shop."

It’s these moments that Kane seems especially drawn to these days, as the father of three — daughters Kingsley, 6, and Kodi, 4, and son Krewe, 21 months — continues to find ways to ensure that he is there for his family as much as he possibly can.
"The longer we are together, especially with our kids growing up, the more I just don’t want to miss a moment," says Kane, whose new song, "Woman" is inspired by and dedicated to his muse and wife. "The last two or three years, I’ve just been a homebody. If I leave and they're not with me, I don't know what to do with myself."
And when he does have to be away from his family, Brown says they are constantly on his mind. "The hardest thing is trying to take opportunities because that’s when I’m away from them," says Kane, who is currently working on a new album that just might include another duet with Katelyn. "I’m always ready to be home."
"Kane has been such an amazing father and such an amazing husband," Katelyn raves. "He shows up for us in every way. I could not ask for a better situation. We really do have the best of both worlds."
So, could there be a time when audiences might hear Katelyn and Kane doing "Beauty and the Beast" live on tour? "I think we could totally do it live," Katelyn tells PEOPLE. "Would it be a fun one to do live? I think it'd be a lot of work. We would just have to practice it like anything else."
