Sabrina Carpenter only wrapped up her Short n’ Sweet tour two weeks ago, but she’s already trying something new.

For over a year, the artist made a shiny penthouse her on-stage home—performing night after night in a two-story set designed to look like the most enviable ’60s city apartment, complete with a fluffy canopy bed and a pink heart-shaped conversation pit. Her wardrobe of babydoll dresses and vintage-inspired bodysuits leaned further into the retro slumber party theme, as did her nightly game of spin the bottle and her lineup of conversational, vulnerable, and playful hits.

But now, she’s traded the glamorous city life for a cozy cottagecore retreat. Attending the 2025 Variety Hitmakers event, where she was honored with the Hitmaker of the Year award, Carpenter pulled out a patchwork gown from Ralph Lauren’s Spring/Summer 2003 collection.

Reminiscent of your grandmother’s favorite quilt, the mixed-pattern piece was constructed from half a dozen fabrics, including silky floral prints and vintage wallpaper-inspired stripes. Pieced together in varying sized segments, they formed a strapless silhouette with a subtle mermaid hem and train that trailed behind her. And it looked comfy too—although perhaps that’s just because it offered up some serious bedspread inspiration.

Of course, her look was not the only piece of inspiration she shared last night. Accepting her award, she let the crowd in on her hit-making secret: “The easiest way to write a bad song is to try to write a hit.”

“Write the opposite of what you think a hit is,” she advised. “Write what speaks to you, write something that only you can write. Write the music you want to listen to yourself. Add the weird chord progression and key change, and call men stupid in as many ways as you can.”
