Scott Foley jokes “nobody cares” about his Scrubs character, Sean Kelly

The actor says he was asked to return for the new revival but couldn’t due to scheduling conflicts

Zach Braff says he’d “love” to see Foley come back and reprise his role

Scott Foley doesn't think anyone is holding out for his return in Scrubs.

The actor, 53, caught up with PEOPLE at the Jan. 21 premiere of his Wonder Project show It’s Not Like That, where he reflected on the Scrubs reboot and joked that his absence from the newly revived series isn’t exactly a major loss.

Foley appeared in the original Scrubs across seasons 1, 3 and 8, playing Sean Kelly, a dolphin trainer who dated Dr. Elliot Reid (Sarah Chalke) and, later, Dr. Kim Briggs (Banks).

“It's been so long since I did it. I think that my character — was he in a relationship with Elizabeth Banks' character? I think maybe,” he teased. “Maybe they’re married with a couple of kids.”

“Nobody cares,” Foley jokes. “Nobody cares about Sean anywhere. Nobody cares.”

The medical comedy, which originally aired from 2001 to 2010, officially returned on Feb. 25, 2026, with original cast members Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Chalke, Judy Reyes, John C. McGinley, and Christa Miller reprising their roles.

The revival follows Dr. John “J.D.” Dorian (Braff) and Christopher Turk (Faison) as they navigate life back at Sacred Heart alongside a new generation of interns, with their longtime friendship still intact.

While Foley didn’t return for the revival, it wasn’t for lack of interest. In January, Foley explained that he could not take part in the revival due to scheduling conflicts, though he didn’t rule out the possibility of returning in the future.

“I've had the good fortune of working with [creator] Bill Lawrence not just on Scrubs, but then I did Cougar Town and I did Undatable,” he said in an interview with Josh Wilding on Jan. 19. “He and I, we made Whiskey Cavalere in the Czech Republic together. So we've had a long history of working together.”

“Zach has asked me to come back,” Foley revealed of the show’s lead. “I actually got a call right when they were starting production. They had me scheduled for an episode, and we couldn't work the schedule out. So I'm sure we'll find the time.”

Braff has also made it clear he’d welcome Foley back into the fold. “Scott Foley is one of the funniest straight men ever,” he said. “A lot of people know this because he’s usually playing the heartthrob somewhere, but I’d love for Scott Foley to come back and be my nemesis again.”

The Scrubs reboot airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
